Weekend kid craft: Make an easy, fun teepee

Itching for something to do? Have fun making this DIY teepee with your child today by following our step-by-step guide.

Teepees can be expensive in stores, so why not save some money, get crafty, and learn how to create one yourself?

Their own teepee may be just what your child needs if they enjoy building forts or curling up with a nice book. They can unwind in their own space or play games with their siblings, allowing their imaginations to run wild. You can also adjust the size of the teepee to fit your child’s age.

You will need

  • 5-6m fabric
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine (optional)
  • Fabric glue
  • Four 2m wooden dowels
  • Rope or ribbon

Method

1. Use this template to trace four triangles of fabric that will form the sides of your teepee.

2. Cut out and join the fabric triangles together along each side, either by sewing or with fabric glue.

3. Secure your wooden dowels by tying the tops together with ribbon or string, interlacing it between each pole a few times. Your dowels should now stand in a triangle.

4. Drape the fabric over the poles and push the top of the dowels through the hole at the top of the joined fabric pieces.

5. Cut the front triangle up the middle to create an opening. Remember not to cut all the way to the top so all four triangles remain joined at the top.

6. Use fabric glue to hem the edges of the opening. Sew or glue ribbon onto the side panels to create tie-backs for the opening.

7. Decorate your teepee with bunting, a rug, and some scatter cushions.
