Twenty three fires in a week

Working on Fire (WoF) Limpopo has announced on Tuesday 18 September that it had responded to more than 23 fires across the province in a matter of a week.

Working on Fire (WoF) Limpopo has announced on Tuesday 18 September that it had responded to more than 23 fires across the province in a matter of a week.

This followed an incident where the community of Melkrivier, near Vaalwater, “almost got swallowed up by flames”, but then WoF firefighters saved the day.

WoF provincial spokesperson, Matema Gwangwa, said a wildfire had been swept by the wind, and was fast approaching a local village, when the firefighters were alerted and moved swiftly to douse out the flames, on Friday 14 September.

Firefighters continued to monitor flare-ups until Sunday 16 September.

“Only 120 hectares of grass vegetation was destroyed. Neither properties nor lives were lost during the Melkrivier fire.

“Thanks to the firefighters and the Modimolle Fire Protection Association for joining forces and saving lives, protecting the environment and protecting the properties from the raging
wildfires,” Gwangwa said.

She said apart from the incident at Melkrivier, firefighters were summoned to 22 other fires at various parts of the province.
