Raising funds for cancer awareness

A fundraiser golf day will be hosted by the Marlene van Staden Breast Cancer Foundation on Friday 8 March at the Koro Creek Golf Estate in Modimolle.

The foundation was established in November last year in memory of the former Modimolle-Mookgophong Mayor Marlene van Staden, who passed away due to breast cancer in June.

The 42-year-old Van Staden had the BRCA-1 gene mutation, a hereditary condition that widely affected her family. The foundation aims to prevent breast cancer deaths through awareness, also among medical professionals, of the benefits of genetic testing for hereditary cancers. Both gene mutation and breast cancer can affect men too. Dr Marthinus Heystek, a family member of Van Staden, advises fathers to go for genetic testing, as they need to know if they are the carriers of the gene.

The foundation wants to support both patients and their families through the process of testing and treatment. They aim to create a multi-disciplinary team of experts to support families with inherited harmful variants of BRCA1 or BRCA2.

More information regarding the foundation is available at www.angelm.org.za.

Golfers supporting the day will make a valuable contribution to creating more awareness around this issue.

The competition will be held in a better ball-Stableford format.

Another golf day to the benefit of the foundation will take place on Thursday 10 October at the Woodhill Golf Estate in Pretoria.
