Alpheus tumbles parkrun record

Alpheus Monene shattered the parkrun record in Modimolle on Saturday 18 November.

The parkrun, a popular 5km trail on Saturday mornings through the Koro Creek Golf Estate, is attended weekly by more than 100 runners and walkers of all fitness levels and ages.

Monene completed the route in an impressive time of 16:32 — a new best time in the male category. He joined the exclusive sub-17 parkrun elite. Monene is in the age group for men 25 to 29 years and it was his third parkrun.

The record for women was set in January 2020 by Carmie Prinsloo with a time of 18:19.

Monene, who trains with the local athletics club Fitness for All, says he will definitely be back to chase his own record.

“The run was nice and easy. I will encourage others to also take part in this event,” he said.

The 28-year-old Monene started running 14 years ago after his elder brother introduced him to the sport. “I fell in love with running and never stopped,” he said. He usually takes part in half marathons.

The parkrun recently celebrated its fifth year and held its 184th event in that week. The average finish time for participants is 44:11 minutes.

The free event kicks off at 07:00 every Saturday morning.
