Bodybuilder to flex muscles in Italy

Bela-Bela’s bodybuilding community is not only gaining a reputation on a national level, but also on an international level.

Thabo Mabotja (32), an aspiring bodybuilder from town, has been selected as a contender in the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) event in Taranto, Italy, in 2023.

Mabotja was in the top three contestants during the All-Africa Championships in September at Unisa in Pretoria. He was also overall third in the Mr Fitness Model category earlier this year.

“I started to compete in bodybuilding in 2019. My initial love for the gym began in 2011 and soon thereafter bodybuilding appealed to me and I started a rigorous training program,” said Mabotja.

“My physique is in good shape and I am a dedicated sportsman. Exercising keeps my mind distracted from pitfalls that can lead to a harmful lifestyle. I stick to my diet plan and I remain focused and train hard.”

Mabotja, who is not permanently employed, is at the gym from Mondays to Fridays.

He says the contribution and support of the local community has enabled him and his co-bodybuilders to travel and compete on a national level.

Mabotja stated that he is a proud resident of Bela-Bela and if he is able to compete in Italy in May 2023, he would represent the town and country with pride.

“I am in need of funds to obtain my passport and visa and also to pay the entry fees. I trust that people will support me and my endeavours to promote sport development in town.”
