The Modimolle Mayor’s Cup has proved to be growing from strength to strength, with the top four teams rewarded with prizemoney, compared to the previous years where they only received soccer kits and trophies.

Vulani Masters FC of Modimolle, who took home the honours, received R4 000 in prize-money, a trophy and a full soccer kit, after beating Happy Boys FC in the final.

Happy Boys FC did not go home empty-handed, as the Modimolle team took home R3 000 prizemoney plus a trophy.

The teams on the third and fourth positions also received R1000 each.

The Modimolle Mayor’s Cup gives all the teams within the Modimolle-Mookgophong municipality the opportunity to compete on an annual basis during the month of December.

Modimolle-Mookgophong Mayor Marlene van Staden said the Mayor’s Cup gives an opportunity for the youngsters to showcase their football talent.

“You never know who is sitting in the crowd. There can always be people who come to scout for talent,” she said.

Van Staden said the objective is to also keep young people away from drugs, while developing their talent at the same time.

The mayor acknowledged Waterberg Toyota for its continuous support of the tournament.

Modimolle-Mookgophong LFA Chairperson, Hlupi Lehong, said it was a long but rewarding journey, starting with the preliminary stages and culminating into the last eight stages, where the
ultimate winner had to be decided through knockouts.

Lehong said since the Mayor’s Cup allowed even teams that are not featured in any league, it afforded the LFA an opportunity to recruit new teams through this event.
