A total of six grannies from Bela-Bela are headed for the Eastern Cape capital of Nelson Mandela Bay to represent Limpopo in the national indigenous games from Saturday 19 October to Saturday 26 October.

A total of six grannies from Bela-Bela are headed for the Eastern Cape capital of Nelson Mandela Bay to represent Limpopo in the national indigenous games from Saturday 19 October to Saturday 26 October.

The grand ol’ ladies emerged victorious from the Limpopo provincial leg of the championships staged on Saturday 12 October and Sunday 13 October.

The senior citizens, who are aged between 60 and 69, are namely Rhina Seima, Elizabeth Molefe, Mary Ralebotja, Onicca Kekana, Paulina Mpedi and Paulina Moaga.

Seima has a huge responsibility on her shoulders, scheduled to represent Limpopo in the game of jukskei.

The rest of the participants are expected to raise the Limpopo flag in the game of ring-the-stick.

The six will depart from Polokwane by luxury coach on Friday 18 October, and will be accommodated on the premises of Nelson Mandela Bay University, where the games will be staged.

“It is such a good feeling to represent the province … we call on other senior citizens to join in next time,” said Mpedi.

She said they are all looking forward to showcasing their talents at national level.

They are scheduled to compete with other senior citizens arriving from all nine provinces.

The Limpopo team coach, Thabo Molokomme, said the indigenous games had grown over the years, drawing interest from as far as the People’s Republic of China.

The Chinese planned to introduce the indigenous games to the elderly in China.
