Walk of Magnificence rated as successful

The initiator of the town to town (Mookgophong to Modimolle) 43-km walk named the “Walk of Magnificence”, Abiot Mahlatse Ledwaba, was a success.

The initiator of the town to town (Mookgophong to Modimolle) 43-km walk named the “Walk of Magnificence”, Abiot Mahlatse Ledwaba, was a success.

He told The BEAT the second edition of the annual event was “more challenging” but yet better, more successful than last year’s.

Compared to last year’s walk where Ledwaba participated with his cousin, this year a total of six locals took part in the event.

The participants were Ali Maleka, Abram Khutjo Ledwaba, Odirile Gololo, Abiot Mahlatse Ledwaba, Mohau Nicky Moloto and Dimakatso Thoka.

In a previous interview, Ledwaba said the main objective of the initiative was to honour the youth of 1976, who sacrificed their lives in order to fight against the oppressive system of
Apartheid.

On 16 June 1976 in Soweto, thousands of students who intended to stage a peaceful protest march were met with teargas and live ammunition when they were intercepted by the police.

Many of the students lost their lives on the day, while others were reportedly never seen again by their families.

Mahlatse’s cousin, Khutjo Ledwaba, said he enjoyed the walk, and had more fun on the road to Modimolle.

Mahlatse said they managed to finish this year’s walk faster than they did last year.

“Last year we finished in 9 hours and 22 minutes, and this year the finishing time has improved to 8 hours and 6 minutes,” he said.

He also acknowledged the support from the motorists and people who interacted with them on social media while they were going live.

For more information on the past event and updates on upcoming events, Mahlatse Ledwaba urged locals to like his Facebook page Magnificent Communications and also by following @magnificentcoms on Twitter and Instagram.
