It was a joyous day in Modimolle on Youth Day, Sunday 16 June, when the supporters of Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club from all walks of life came for the official launch of the local branch.

The day also served to remember and honour staunch Mamelodi Sundowns supporter, the late Papi Sammy Lebele, who was affectionately known as Papzen.

Lebele’s family members drove from Gauteng and North West to come and support the locals as they were launching the branch in Modimolle.

Lebele’s sister, Keba Motlogeloa, hailed her late brother as a “game changer”, citing that he always went the extra mile to make things happen.

Motlogeloa said her brother was always a positive influence to everyone around him.

She challenged the local supporters, more especially the newly-elected committee to emulate Mamelodi Sundowns owner Patrice Motsepe, by doing good in their own communities.

“You do not need money to make a difference in the next person’s life. Let us bring positive changes in our communities, and we will see our branches growing admirably,” she said.

Mamelodi Sundowns national executive committee secretary, Mpho Mothupi, said he was looking forward to see the Modimolle Mamelodi Sundowns supporters’ club banner visible at soccer venues, during the club’s matches.

Mothupi urged the elected leadership to always remain focused and advance the interests of the local supporters.

The national supporters’ club coordinator, Cedric Moela, challenged the Modimolle Sundowns faithful to always be on the ground and listen to the grievances of the people.

“The only way to counter against negativity is to remain progressive. Make sure you are always closer to your community, and help wherever you can,” he said.

The newly-elected committee is made up of chairperson, Joseph Kganya, deputy chairperson, Maggy Tlhabane, Papi Lehwelere (secretary), Piet Modimola (deputy secretary) and treasurer Stephen Lepuru.
