Modimole rising star William Mabena would on Friday 4 January jet out to the USA city of Snyder, Texas, for a scholarship achieved through his sterling performances on the athletics track.

The Hoërskool Nylstroom learner has been enlisted to study but also enhance his performances on the indoor and outdoor athletics circuit at Western Texas College, following a career from which he broke several records.

The track and field athlete took to athletics while in Grade 10 at Vaalwater’s Mohlakamotala Secondary School in 2016, where he impressed his trainers in both track and field events.

He then proceeded to Hoërskool Nylstroom in 2017, where he was placed under the wing of coach, Jaco Vosloo, who worked with the youngster from July to December.

He went to break the school’s 400-metres record dating back to the year 1970, the 200-metres record (1979) and the 100-meteres sprint record (2001).

Mabena also excelled at district level, showing his opponents a clean pair of heels, in the 200-metres and 100-metres events.

Mabena broke the 100-metres sprint record dating back to 2009 at provincial level when he won the 100-metres event, and also won the 200-metres event, without breaking the record.

“My family, friends, teachers, coach and superstar Usain Bolt, inspire me a lot and encourage me to work harder,” Mabena said.
