In what could only be described as a major setback for local soccer, the much-loved Bela-Bela Soccer Academy was sent packing from the multi-million rand Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup.

The fixture against Makhutjisa High School had to be decided on the dreaded penalty shootout, after ending 1-all at regulation time, during regional finals played in Bakenberg outside Mokopane on Saturday 18 August.

Bela-Bela Soccer Academy mentor, Sam Modise, said the disappointing result was but a lesson learnt by the youngsters.

“They missed so many chances in the first half of the game. They could have done better,” he said.

Modise said the focus for the academy going forward was preparations for the team’s under-15 squad, which was scheduled to represent the Waterberg at the Copa Coca Cola Cup taking place at
Giyani’s Malamulele Stadium on Saturday 1 September.

Meanwhile, Modise said the Bela-Bela Soccer Academy has thrown open invitations to talented yongsters to take part in trials scheduled for Bela-Bela High School Stadium on Saturday 25 August.

Participants born during the years 2004 and 2005 were advised to bring their own kit.
