Soccer lovers in Mookgophong were treated to a four-team showdown at the Phomolong Sports Grounds, on Sunday 8 July.

The double-header kicked off with a fixture between Roedtan FC and Naboom Chiefs FC, with SAB League side Mookgophong Junior Stars FC squaring off with TS Academy FC later in the day.

Naboom Chiefs FC found the back of the net late in the first half, and continued to enjoy possession of the ball for the most part of the match.

It was during the referee’s optional time that Roedtan FC spoiled their opponent’s party with an equaliser.

With the final whistle scoreline at 1-all, the two teams had to go to the dreaded penalty shootout, which was ultimately won by Naboom Chiefs FC, with a 6-5 scoreline.

In the second match of the day, Junior Stars FC came back 1-0 down, and managed to eliminate TS Academy FC 2-1.

Both winners, Junior Stars FC and Naboom Chiefs, were fixtured to advance to the Mayor’s Cup quarter-finals scheduled for Modimolle on a yet to be announced date.

The matches were used as a decider for the two teams who would advance to the quarter-finals of the Modimolle-Mookgophong Mayor’s Cup.

Modimolle-Mookgophong Local Football Association (LFA) chairperson, Hlupi Lehong, said the semifinals were scheduled for Vaalwater on Saturday 21 July.
