Careful with fireworks during festivities

The reign of terror which afflicts Mookgophong’s pet population indiscriminately, and often criminally, is ignited by noisy fireworks at all times of the day and night.

Every Christmas and New Years’ Day one wakes up to the sound of World War 3 in Mookgophong.

The reign of terror which afflicts Mookgophong’s pet population indiscriminately, and often criminally, is ignited by noisy fireworks at all times of the day and night.

Persons or businesses must first obtain a license to provide or sell fireworks unless they hold a trading license in terms of the Explosives Act and written authority of the Chief Fire Officer.

There are definitive restrictions when it comes to igniting fireworks:

  • No person may ignite in a place where animals are present — which include domestic homes.
  • No person may allow a minor (under 16) to use, light or ignite fireworks.
  • No person may use fireworks on any agricultural holding or at any school or senior citizens residence without special authorization. This authorization must be sought well in advance.
  • No person may use fireworks within 500 meters of any petrol depot or petrol station without special authorization.
  • Business have a role to play during the upcoming festive season by reporting those who are dealing in fireworks immediately to the police and the Community Policie Forum (CPF).
  • Those who do not adhere to the law, will received heavy penalties.
  • Residents also have a responsibility to report any wrongdoing to the police and the CPF. Please ensure that you give the correct address and names of perpetrators.
