Respect municipal bylaws and policies

Respecting a law means that it should be adhered to.

Concerned tax payer, Mookgophong, writes:

With reference to the Mayoral Column in The Post of Friday 31 August, I wish to comment to her as follows: You stated that we have the responsibility to respect municipal bylaws and policies.

Respecting a law means that it should be adhered to, which I fully support.

However, if your traffic department does not enforce traffic bylaws and the councillor responsible for traffic issues turns a blind eye, it makes me wonder if it is worth the paper it is written on. In chapter 1 of a Mookgophong bylaw, the general provisions relating to parking, item 6, states: No heavy motor vehicle used for conveying goods may park between 20:00 and 06:00 anywhere in the municipal area, except on private land.

This bylaw was raised in a DA meeting of about nine months ago chaired by Desiree van der Walt and assisted by two of your councillors.

It was also addressed in The Post “Bylaws about heavy vehicles available” and in a writing in the paper of 23 June 2017: “Trokke ’n kopseer vir sakelui”, plus many other written complaints from residents and even a WhatsApp from a police member.

Numerous “No Parking” signs were erected, but it made no difference to the truck drivers. Until recently trucks even parked in front of the police charge office.

It is not only an unlawful parking issue. Truck drivers who frequently overnight here, increase crime such as theft, drugs and prostitution which is rife to our town.

I appeal to you, as the mayor, to please take some time at night and come and see for yourself.
