Learners reminded who Madiba was

The life of former president and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Nelson Mandela (fondly known as Madiba), was celebrated at Modimolle Primary School in Phagameng last week.

Learners were told of Mandela’s legacy and his wish for this country to prosper.

The mayor, Sechele Sebolai, attended the event. He was accompanied by representatives from Correctional Services, the Police, and the School Governing Body (SGB). The learners were reminded of the hardship they had to endure on Robben Island and were shown what correctional services uniforms look like.

“Though the older generation knows exactly who Nelson Mandela was, these young children often do not know about his life and achievements. They only know him as the face on an R100 note,” said the school’s principal, Amoré Badenhorst.

The school, which has 1 150 learners, also thanked Tiger Brands for their loyal sponsorship of the feeding scheme by unveiling a large, colorful mural painted near the kitchen. The wall was painted with meticulous detail by a local artist. Tiger Brands serves breakfast daily and previously sponsored the school to build a kitchen. This has enabled them to improve the feeding scheme.
