Spotlight shines on local tourism

Limpopo Premier, Dr Phophi Ramathuba launched Tourism Thursdays in August to promote tourism to the province’s diverse destinations.

This sector is an important employment creator in the province. September is Tourism Month and she encouraged all mayors in the province’s five districts to promote tourism in their areas.

In the Modimolle-Mookgphong Municipality, mayor Sechele Sebolai, joined in and visited the Leeuwenhof Country Lodge and Spa in Alma with its luxurious accommodation and spa on Thursday 5 September.

He and officials from the municipality also joined in on the lodge’s strawberry-picking excursion.

On Thursday 12 September the team paid a visit to Shekinah Lion and Game Lodge in the 24 Rivers area near Vaalwater. The lodge offers an unforgettable wildlife experience with lions separated from the bedroom by only a wall of glass.

“This province’s rich tapestry of tourism products has great potential to attract greater investment opportunities. With this drive, we want to secure jobs and increase the number of tourism establishments even in rural areas to cater to those who are visiting friends and relatives,” said Premier Dr Ramathuba during the launch.

Mayor Sebolai said that he embraced this project as tourism and agriculture are the major economic drives for the municipality.

“We have a responsibility to market the tourism destinations that we have and we have a lot to offer.

The more people that visit, the stronger the sector will become and boost the economy in our towns to create more jobs.”

He said that the initiative should not end when it is no longer Tourism Month. The municipality team plans to visit Castle de Wildt as well as the Nylsvley Nature Reserve shortly.
