New mayor for the Waterberg

A new district mayor and speaker have been elected for the Waterberg District Municipality.

This follows the resignation of former mayor Morris Mataboge and speaker Regina Molokomme as they were redeployed to the Limpopo Legislature.

Jack Maeko was elected as the new Executive Mayor and Matlakala Josphine Gumede as speaker of the council. Both were elected unopposed.

Maeko encouraged all councillors during his acceptance speech, to work together irrespective of the party they represent. He said that he will be working hand in hand with the Mining, Tourism and Agricultural sectors to reduce unemployment in the district. He elaborated on the establishment of the Waterberg Development Plan within the next 100 days, which will be aligned with the National Development Plan.

The district council oversees the municipalities of Mogalakwena (Mokopane), Bela-Bela, Thabazimbi, Lephalale and Modimolle-Mookgophong. The council has 36 seats, of which 20 belong to the ANC, seven to the DA, six to the EFF, one to the Freedom Front Plus, one to a representative of Traditional Leaders and one seat to the Thabazimbi Residents’ Association (TRA).
