New chapter for public library

The public library in Modimolle is set to turn a new page as much-needed renovations are almost complete.

Work on the library began in November last year after it was not in use for almost two years due to leaking roofs. The Department of Labour closed down the building in February 2022 due to health concerns.

The Ruth First Library, which is located next to the municipal offices, is named after an academic and political activist.

Employees previously told Die Pos that when it rained, water streamed down the walls and pooled inside the ceilings. Concerns were raised that the water may cause trouble with the electrical wiring. It has also caused much damage to the buildings. According to a report, the biggest leaks were in the auditorium and the children’s reading area.

According to Sechele Sebolai, mayor of the Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipality, the project is practically completed, with the last work scheduled to be done by Monday 8 July. The

Department of Arts and Culture allocated R1, 531 370 to restore the library.

The progress report stated that five locals were employed for the project. The project included the repair of the library’s roof, the laying of tiles as the carpets were damaged, the improvement of drainage on the roof and the pruning of trees around the building. The lights inside the building were replaced and the air conditioners were serviced or replaced where needed. Walls were painted and doors and blinds were installed where necessary. The ceiling in the auditorium had to be replaced.

Buying books is expensive and a public library brings quality reading material within easy reach of communities. The library also offers a quiet space for students to study who do not have the space for this at home. The library’s auditorium was also put to good use for meetings and for Unisa students to write exams.
