Municipality halts ‘illegal’ truck stops after damage to town infrastructure

In a follow-up report concerning the heavy vehicles parked in Bela-Bela overnight, which often lead to the damage of, especially municipal infrastructure, Die Pos is happy to report that the municipality is making good on promises, and they are visibly addressing the problem.

In, Die Pos, of 26 April, it was reported that a heavy vehicle parked on Sutter Road damaged a water mainline and subsequently got stuck in the mud on the side of the road. The issue was raised by residents and business owners that there is a lack of law enforcement by traffic officials.

In response to this matter, Peter Moloto, Communication Manager for the Bela-Bela Municipality, said:

“The municipality is currently having a plan to address the problem and you will soon see traffic officers dealing with these trucks at night.”

During the Mayoral Roadshow, held at Laerskool Warmbad on Tuesday 7 May, the Municipal Manager, George Ramagaga, confirmed that action has been taken and that senior municipal officers, including himself, accompanied traffic officials during an after-hours operation in the CBD on Monday, 6 May. He emphasised that it was not a once-off operation, and it will now be a regular occurrence.

“We don’t want trucks parking overnight in our town”, he said.

Moloto also provided Die Pos with exclusive video footage of this operation in progress (see video below).

It is hoped that this problem can be addressed in such a manner that a safe solution can also be found for the truck drivers that have to overnight in Bela-Bela, heading for other destinations.

Although this is only a partial solution, it is a step in the right direction by Bela-Bela Municipality.
