Upgrade to sewer pipeline completed

A newly upgraded main sewer pipeline project in Mookgophong was handed over by several dignitaries on Monday, 15 April.

Basikopo Makamu, MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta), Parks Tau, Deputy Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CogTA), David Mahlobo, Deputy Minister of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation, Executive Mayor of the Waterberg District, Morris Mataboge and local Mayor of the Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipality, Sechele Sebolai and several local traditional leaders attended the event.

According to the Ministry of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), the upgrading of the bulk sewer pipelines was necessary as it was unable to keep up with the demands of the growing population especially Extensions 5 and 6 in Mookgophong. This resulted in repeated sewage spillages. The project is in Ward 4, but spillages in Wards 5 and 6 were prevalent. The sewer lines also connect to Extension 3, which is adjacent to the project.

The municipality, he said, could not address the issue due to budgetary constraints and did not have the technical capacity. The Department of Water and Sanitation, through their Water Services Infrastructure Grant (WSIG) stepped in and provided funding for the project.

The Department of Cooperative Governance provided technical support via the Municipal Infrastructure Support Agent (MISA).

Following the handover, the dignitaries interacted with the community.
