Mayor unscathed in late-night crash with tractor

A late-night crash into the back of a tractor caused serious damage to the brand-spanking new BMW X3 of the mayor of the Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipality, Sechele Sebolai. Both Sebolai and the driver of the tractor were unscathed after the accident.

Sebolai was driving on the R101 road about 8 km from Modimolle to Mookgophong, when he crashed into the back of a tractor driving with no lights or reflectors on Tuesday 20 February.

“By the time I saw the tractor in the road, it was too late and there was nothing I could do. It was an accident that could happen to anyone,” he told Die Pos.

He categorically denies the allegations on social media that he fled the scene before the police arrived.

The tractor involved in the accident.

“I was with the driver of the tractor for about 20 minutes when the traffic officers arrived. An ambulance arrived about 45 minutes later. After an hour and a half, I left to consult my doctor to check if I did not sustain injuries. The police only arrived after that. I did not run away from the scene,” he said.

The BMW is one of two recently acquired by the municipality for the mayor and the speaker of the council as official vehicles, Die Pos was told by councilors.

Modimolle-Mookgophong mayor, Sechele Sebolai.

According to Sebolai, the vehicle was insured and has been assessed by the insurance company. They have not yet received an estimate of the extent of the damage.
