Two mayors in line for provincial leader

Two of the candidates nominated for the position of provincial leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) are mayors in the Waterberg region.

The nominated candidates are Marlene van Staden, mayor of the Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipality since 2016, Nico Pienaar, mayor of the Lephalale Municipality since October 2022, Beyers Smit of Mokopane, member of parliament (MP), and Lindy Wilson of Polokwane, a member of parliament.

The new leadership will be elected during the party’s provincial congress that takes place on Saturday, May 27th.

The position of a provincial leader opened up after Jacques Smalle resigned. He is to continue serving as an MP.

Desiree van der Walt was elected as the DA’s Limpopo Legislature’s Caucus leader.

According to James Masango of the DA, should any of the two mayors be elected for the position of provincial DA leader, they will continue in their positions as mayors.

“Helen Zille became the federal leader while she was the mayor of Cape Town and the premier of Western Cape,” he said.

  • Desiree van der Walt, head of the Waterberg Constituency for many years, has this week been elected as the DA’s Limpopo Legislature’s Caucus leader. Only one nomination was received and Van der Walt was elected uncontested.
