Choppies worker collapse in store

Staff, friends and family of Nkele Mothokoa from Bela-Bela are left traumatized after she died suddenly on Monday 1 May (Workers Day) after collapsing at her place of work, Choppies.

Mothokoa was a cash office supervisor and frontline (cashiers) manager.

Mothokoa collapsed while she was in the process of handing out the cashier’s change at approximately 10:00.

She was taken to the hospital by a co-worker where a doctor at the casualty unit declared that she was dead on arrival.

According to Agnes Setebi, her co-worker, no one could imagine that they would lose a co-worker so suddenly.

“She came in the morning as usual and was her normal fun-loving self. I cannot remember if she ever missed a day’s work, except during her off days. None of us knew if she ever had an ailment. She was always chirpy and in good health. What caused her sudden death is still a mystery,” said Setebi.

“We struggle to come to terms with her sudden death. The staff admitted that they could not sleep that night. I think what was most traumatic is that customers and staff, who have known her for years, saw her collapse.”

Setebi says even during the transition period when Hyperland changed to Choppies, Mothokoa always remained positive and motivated others.

“She worked here for years and she was always in an amicable mood. She always smiled, made jokes, was supportive and was seen taking charge. She was fair and straightforward.”

Mothokoa was the mother of two children, according to Setebi.

The Choppies staff are awaiting assistance from the head office to help them through this difficult time.

No funeral arrangements were made known before the newspaper went to press.
