Historic church spared as hall is razed to the ground

The community hall of the historic St. John’s Church in 24 Riviere outside Vaalwater went up in flames after it was struck by lightning on Thursday 5 November.

According to Shane Dowinton the community hall was destroyed in the fire.

The original building that dates from 1914 was not damaged. This building has been witness to the joy, anguish, love, disputes, unity and spiritual wellbeing of several generations of congregants in the area.

It was designed by the prominent and distinguished English architect Sir Herbert Baker who had great influence in architecture in South Africa.

Baker also designed the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

The St. John’s Church was built from local sandstone quarried in the area.

According to Dowinton they will conti- nue to meet every Sunday under the pergola until a new building has been built. The original church can only seat 40 people and a larger venue is needed.
