Cashless payment system rollout

These cashless systems are meant to be rolled out in rural areas where grant recipients reside far from metro’s or shopping centers.

The South African Post Office (SAPO) recently made a decision that cashless transactions may be the way forward for social grant recipients after a total of 10 000 cashless ATM machines were rolled out across the country.

Recent distributions were done in Limpopo.

This unique payment system is meant to address congestion in queues at ATM’s, retail stores and post office branches at the end of each month, when people receive their grants, said Colleen Makhubela, chairperson of the SAPO board of directors.

Johan Kruger, SAPO spokesperson, told The Post when a grant recipient visits a retail outlet, they simply place their South African social security agency-card (SASSA) into a special pay point machine. The recipient then types in their secret pin number and then receives a voucher that can be redeemed for goods.

The card holder can decide how much money they wish to redeem from their SASSA account, which will benefit their spending in the long run, Kruger said.

These cashless systems are meant to be rolled out in rural areas where grant recipients reside far from metro’s or shopping centers. Outlets which can be furnished with these pay point machines can include spaza shops or general dealers.

Kruger said grant recipients will save on travelling costs and remain safer against the risks of carrying cash around, especially now that cashless transactions and smaller queues will limit the spread of Covid-19.

It is still unclear when some of these machines will be rolled out in the Waterberg area, Kruger said.

Traders who are interested in obtaining one of these pay point systems for their shops can send an email to cashless@postoffice.co.za(.)
