Decision to place municipality under administration welcomed

The DA and the EFF have welcomed the decision by the Limpopo provincial government to place the Mogalakwena Local Municipality under administration.

The MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta), Basikopo Makamu, made the announcement at the provincial members’ assembly of the South African Local Government Association (Salga).

The event was held at the Bela-Bela Forever Resorts on Wednesday 20 and Thursday 21 November.

Makamu said the Mogalakwena Municipality has been placed under administration in terms of Section 139 of the Constitution.

He said the intervention need not be perceived as a punishment, as its objective was to restore effective governance.

Makamu said that the provincial authorities were still awaiting the outcome of a forensic investigation.

EFF Limpopo chairperson, Jossey Buthane, expressed disappointment that the ANC only acted following damage to property during a series of total shutdown strike action.

DA local councillor Korny Dekker said the party welcomed the fact that the MEC has finally listened to the party’s calls for the intervention.
