Municipality addressing Eskom debt

Modimolle Mayor Marlene van Staden has reassured residents that the municipality is making progress with regards to addressing the issue of the Eskom debt.

Modimolle Mayor Marlene van Staden has reassured residents that the municipality is making progress with regards to addressing the issue of the Eskom debt.

She said the municipality has already managed to pay about R5-million towards the municipality’s Eskom account.

According to Van Staden, this was some of the positive results yielded by the introduction of the new prepaid electricity vending system.

In October the municipality put in place stringent measures to govern the pre-paid purchasing and selling of electricity in all areas.

The new system was however received with mixed feelings as it also had negative effects on the consumer.

Residents were left frustrated as the online banking system was also affected, in a sense that residents are now unable to purchase electricity via online banking platforms.

“We know that this has been a difficult transition for some users, but the process has certainly yielded results,” Van Staden.

The Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipality remains one of the municipalities in South Africans which are greatly indebted to Eskom.

The DA-led municipality owes the power utility no less than R400-million.

Eskom has been threatening the struggling municipality with power cuts, but the action was avoided pending a high court judgement set aside for Tuesday, 12 November.
