Modimolle-Mookgophophong Municipality in R10 million debt to Magalies Water

The Modimolle-Mookgophong Local Municipality confirmed that it owes over R10 million to Magalies Water.

The Modimolle-Mookgophong Local Municipality confirmed that it owes over R10 million to Magalies Water.

This comes after concerns raised by DA Shadow Minister for Water and Sanitation, Emma Powell, that mounting municipal debt threatens to collapse water services across the country.

Powell recently released a statement to the effect that municipalities across the country owe more than R14.9 billion to water boards.

In her response, Modimolle-Mookgophong Mayor Marlene Van Staden said the big picture is that their debt is actually quite small compared to other municipalities.

“We have a payment arrangement with Magalies Water, and we are in good standing. We will again pay at the end of November when we receive our equitable share,” she added.
