Dagbreek Primary School in Modimolle hosted Nutrition Day on Wednesday, 23 October, with the objective to emphasize the importance of healthy eating.

The programme was overseen by The Tiger Brands Foundation, the institution which introduced breakfast at schools at Modimolle schools in 2011.

According to the principal, Emelinah Manne, the school was the first beneficiary in Modimolle, when the foundation introduced this life-changing initiative.

Manne encouraged learners to take advantage of the programme, by consuming less junk food.

She said healthy eating will reduce the chances of getting diseases related to malnutrition among the learners.

The learners were also encouraged to eat the food provided daily during lunch at their school, through the National Schools Nutrition Programme (NSNP).

When outlining the purpose of the day, educator Welheminah Mpya said the objective is to raise awareness on the benefits of healthy eating, and how it helps prevent malnutrition.

The event was both entertaining and informative, with learners rendering items such as drama and poems based on The Tiger Brands Foundation, and the importance of eating nutritious food.

Waterberg District Department of Health Assistant Nutritionist, Ditaba Nengundza, also reiterated on the importance of eating food that enhances growth and wellness.

Nengundza gave the examples of healthy food and the nutrients with which they provide the body.
