Following the introduction of a new electricity vending system last week on Tuesday, 1 October, the Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipality has indicated that more vendors will be gradually added on

the list of those who will be dealing directly with the municipality.

Part of the new developments this week was the introduction of three new vendors, two of them from Alma and one from Mookgophong.

In what was described as an attempt to enhance revenue collection and ensure accountability, the municipality has decided to come up with a new strategy, where only registered vendors will be
able to sell electricity, dealing directly with the Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipality.

This means that the vending contracts will now be between the merchants and the municipality, without having a third party as a middleman.

The new system was however a bit of a hassle when it was introduced last week, leaving residents frustrated in the process.

Phagameng residents who could not manage to wait in the long queues to buy electricity at the registered shops, looked for alternative vendors like one stop shops at fuel stations, only to find
that the network was down.

Modimolle-Mookgophong Mayor Marlene van Staden confirmed that things have improved, and were running smoothly.

“We have also added new points to our list of vendors. We will also continue to add more people over the next few months,” she said.
