Bela-Bela hosts Waterberg’s elderly people

Senior citizens from across local municipalities converged on the Bela-Bela Multi-Purpose Centre for the Waterberg District Active Ageing Programme, held on Thursday 5 September and Friday 6 September.

Senior citizens from across local municipalities converged on the Bela-Bela Multi-Purpose Centre for the Waterberg District Active Ageing Programme, held on Thursday 5 September and Friday 6 September.

Representatives from the District Older Persons Forum, sector departments and municipalities were also in attendance.

The initiative’s objective is to promote the participation of older persons in healthy and active ageing lifestyles.

Older people who are active, stimulated and involved in the community reportedly enjoy a better quality of life and suffer fewer age-related illnesses.

Speaking at the event, Waterberg District Mayoral Committee member, Freddy Hlungwane, said physical health is critical to active ageing and it is never too late to start leading a healthy
lifestyle.

“If you are overweight, make a determined effort to lose a few kilograms by following a healthy diet — go easy on the fats, processed foods and starch, eat more fresh fruit and veggies and drink plenty of water,” he said.
