The lovely season of spring is here in … one, two, tree!

Spring has (almost) sprung.

The newly formed organisation promoting the Waterberg region to tourists, Waterberg Tourism, is asking residents to donate trees to be planted in the town of Vaalwater. These trees will not only aid in greening the Bushveld town, but will be used during Arbor Week from 1 to 7 September to make school children aware of the importance of plants.

The children will be encouraged to plant indigenous, water-friendly trees.

According to Ken Maud of Waterberg Tourism, each tree will become the responsibility of the child who planted it. The programme will be organised by Moji Kitse of Welgevonden Environment Education.

“Help them improve Vaalwater by supporting the children to become more environmentally aware,” Maud said. “Donations of indigenous trees or cash would be gratefully accepted and appreciated.”

The organisation was officially launched last month by the Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipality mayor, Marlene van Staden. It has since held no fewer than six training courses for local people.

“We now want to uplift the town by making it more attractive for visitors,” Maud said.
