A municipal vehicle found transporting stolen copper cables remained impounded by the police on Tuesday 27 August.

Mookgophong police spokesperson, Warrant Officer George Ledwaba, has confirmed the vehicle is under lock and key at the local police station.

Two municipal workers were arrested traveling in the vehicle, after being found in possession of allegedly stolen copper cables.

The Mayor of Modimolle-Mookgophong Marlene Van Staden has called on local residents to immediately report suspicious behaviour, specifically where municipal assets are concerned.

According to Van Staden, a bakkie belonging to the municipality has been impounded during the arrest.

The two suspects are on bail of R1 000 each.

“We apologise for any delay in services in the municipality due to this incident,” Van Staden said.

Mookgophong police spokesperson Warrant Officer George Ledwaba confirmed that the two suspects are now out on bail of R1000 each.

They last appeared in the Mookgophong Magistrate’s Court on Thursday 22 August.

Ledwaba told The BEAT the suspects were charged with possession of stolen property.

The suspects are now expected to appear before the Mookgophong Magistrate’s Court on 2 October, pending further investigations by the police.

The two suspects have since been suspended, according to Van Staden.
