Velskoene for emergent black farmers

Emergent black livestock farmers — most probably in their signature velskoene (animal hide shoes) — will be under the spotlight in coming weeks.

Emergent black livestock farmers — most probably in their signature velskoene (animal hide shoes) — will be under the spotlight in coming weeks.

At least one auctioneer, André Kock and Sons Auctioneers, has splashed out in a full-page advertisement in the community press — among these The BEAT newspaper — alerting the farmers about
cattle coming under the hammer.

The company has lined up several auction days, dating back to one in Bela-Bela in early March.

Forthcoming events include a day of cattle auctioneering in Bela-Bela on Wednesday 24 July.

More cattle are scheduled to go under the hammer in Bela-Bela on Wednesday 31 July.

Livestock farmers from tribal villages around the Waterberg and beyond have been known to pound the beaten track, to look for value at traditionally white Afrikaner auctions for decades.

The BEAT has dispatched correspondence to the company, requesting further details with regards to the participation of emergent black farmers at the auctions.

The fledgling BelaBiz business collective has identified livestock auctioneering as a part of events with the potential to re-position platteland towns as unique tourist destinations.

Other auctions are planned for Vaalwater, Polokwane and Northam.
