Jail break

Suspects on a brazen escape from Modimolle cells

The police in Modimolle have launched a manhunt for seven allegedly dangerous awaiting trial prisoners, who made a daring escape from the local police cells on Saturday 11 May.

Three of the jail break suspects face charges of armed robbery, while the seventh escapee, from Bela-Bela, was facing a charge of rape.

Limpopo SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, warned members of the general public not to confront the escapees, three of them facing charges under the Explosives Act.

He cautioned anyone with information to contact Captain Richard Boshomane at 079 894 5501, or the Crime Stop number at 0860 010 111, or SMS Crime Line at 32211, or alternatively contact the nearest police station.

A statement from Ngoepe was thin on details, only disclosing that “circumstances around the incident” is a subject of ongoing police investigations.

He said the men managed to escape from the holding cells during a routine inspection at around 20:00 on Saturday 11 May.

Ngoepe identified the suspects as Zimbabwean nationals Polano Ndebele and Themba Ncube, and also Mookgophong resident Thapelo Mello, the three of which he said were facing charges under the Explosives Act.

Three other Zimbabwean nationals, Mpho Obvious Lesese, Kenneth Shumba and Kazen Dluwayo, were facing charges of armed robbery.

Ngoepe said the seventh escapee, Sello Rengane, who is facing a charge of rape, is from Bela-Bela.
