Little Mapula, a baby who spent three days in a pit toilet, is reported to be recuperating well and has now found a home in Bela-Bela.

The baby has been taken in by the Huis Tekna home for vulnerable children in downtown Bela-Bela.

The baby was rescued from a pit toilet in Lephalale on December 17 last year.

Social Development MEC, Mapula Mokaba-Phukwana, expressed deep sadness following the news, while she was also overjoyed that the baby was still alive due to heroic rescue efforts.

According to the department, it is alleged that the 19-year-old mother gave birth to the baby and dumped her in a pit toilet, where she spent three days.

Departmental spokesperson Adel van der Linde said the matter was reported to the local police by one of the family members, who heard the baby crying in the toilet.

The mother has since been arrested.
