Election poster war

Political parties up in arms over defiled posters

Political parties from across the spectrum have condemned the defiling of pre-election posters in parts of the Waterberg and beyond.

In downtown Bela-Bela posters put up by both the ANC and the EFF —  with the faces of President Cyril Ramaphosa and EFF leader Julius Malema — were spray-painted with a message too vulgar to reproduce in a family newspaper.

As for the DA, many of the party’s posters seem to have gone missing from lamp-posts along the main thoroughfare into Bela-Bela.

Posters put up by the EFF in both the Bela-Bela central business district and the township, were in recent days ripped off and thrown into a forest outside of the town, said local party co-
ordinator, Sello Moswoeu.

Waterberg co-ordinator for the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), Dikeme Pilane, said political parties registered for the elections on 8 May, had signed a code of conduct to allow for
free and fair campaigning.

He said parties which had their posters interfered with, should take up the matter with the police.

The DA said in a statement the party did often experience the defiling and removal of its campaign posters.

DA poster manager in the Waterberg, Johan Abrie, said in a statement the party has pledged a reward of R50 000, to anyone with information which can lead to the prosecution of any culprit who
vandalises the party’s posters.

The ANC in Limpopo said it had noted “with utter disgust a systematic pattern” of vandalising its election posters.

“This pattern has been observed throughout the province,” the ANC said.
