Mookgophong churches beating the HIV stigma

Leaders and members of various churches in Mookgophong joined hands to commemorate World Aids Day on Saturday 1 December.

Leaders and members of various churches in Mookgophong joined hands to commemorate World Aids Day on Saturday 1 December.

The day kicked off with a 10 km fun walk and fun run, then later featured street soccer.

Activities were rounded off with a candlelight service, where the community of Mookgophong lit candles as a sign of hope.

The event was held at the Shopping Complex at Mookgophong Township.

The service was led by Reverend Christina Mlangeni of African Methodist Episcopal (AME), Pastor William Sebothoma of Ntlo ya Kgwerano Ministry and Pastor Sipho Mlangeni of Fountain of Praise Tarbenacle Church.

Pastor Mlangeni said the event served to beat the stigma of HIV/Aids among locals, especially in churches.

He said the church should be a place where young people are urged to talk freely, without fear of being judged whenever they have problems.

“The fact that we still experience a high rate of teenage pregnancy means young people are vulnerable to HIV infections,” he said.

Mlangeni told The BEAT the church leaders were working closely with local organisations and the Department of Health, to restore hope in the lives of those who are infected and affected by
HIV/Aids.
