Staff and patients at Bela-Bela Hospital commemorated World Prematurity Day on Saturday 17 November.

Paeditrician Dr Leyva Herrera said premature birth was a condition prevalent worldwide.

“Babies born too early may have more health issues comparable to babies born on time, and may face long-term health problems which affect the brain, lungs, hearing or vision,” she said

World Prematurity Day was aimed at raising awareness about the condition.

Nursing personnel at Bela-Bela Hospital benefited from workshops regarding the prematurity condition, as part of the broader World Prematurity Day.

The nurses were empowered with documentation and other tools to have a better understanding of the prematurity condition.

Three mothers who gave birth to premature babies also shared their stories,

Caroline Mashego, a mother of triplets, applauded the Bela-Bela Hospital officials who were supportive all the way while she was at the hospital.

Ntombi Nkosi was emotional when she spoke about her own experience, saying she had never thought she would be a mother who gave birth prematurely.

“I am grateful to the support from the nursing staff and doctors,” she said.

Queen Ramurulane also expressed her gratitude to the hospital personnel who were supportive throughout.
