Following two incidents of business robberies at Modimolle’s Phagameng Township, the SAPS together with other stakeholders, sat around the table to chart the way forward.

The meeting to thrash out solutions to growing incidents of crime, especially with the festive season approaching, was held at the Public Order Police unit on Sunday 11 November.

The police have reported that two shops owned by foreign businessmen were robbed by unknown gun-wielding suspects on the night of Saturday 10 November.

Although it was reported that several shots were fired during the two incidents, no one sustained injuries.

Stakeholders who participated in the meeting included the religious fraternity, the municipality and the business sector.

Sector commander Captain Mike Motadi pleaded with the business community to ensure that they adhere to their trading licence requirements and the municipal by laws.

“We are not here to point fingers, but to find a solution to this challenge. The main purpose is to outline what is expected from us as the police, and also what role you should play as the
business owners, to help us prevent these incidents,” he said.

He said this will make life easier for both the business community and the police.

The business owners were also urged to close on time, as it tends to be unsafe late at night.

The business representatives spoke in unison that they were willing to adhere to the bylaws, and promised to provide feedback to the police within a reasonable period of time.
