The heart-wrenching aftermath of the Kranskop tragedy

The Limpopo provincial government held a transport Indaba midweek in Polokwane to deliberate on, among other issues, strategies to reduce the high incidents of road accidents, fatalities and traffic congestion on the N1.

This comes at a time when South Africans are still reeling in shock, following an accident which happened on the N1 near Mookgophong on Friday, 19 October.

The accident reportedly occurred when a truck carrying bags of cement lost control and hit oncoming vehicles.

The provincial government said in a statement that the Passenger Rail Agency South Africa (PRASA) and Transnet Freight Rail had plans in the pipeline, to improve freight rail services from
Limpopo to Gauteng to reduce traffic congestion on the road.

The South African National Roads Agency Ltd and Roads Agency Limpopo were also expected to make presentations on the long-term strategies for expanding the roads.

Condolence messages continued to pour in during the week on social media platforms and through media statements.

The Limpopo Premier Stanley Mathababatha was among dignitaries who conveyed sincere condolences to the bereaved families, and further urged road users to drive with caution.

Last weekend the Telkom Knockout fixture between Baroka FC and Golden Arrows had to be rescheduled from the afternoon to a later time slot, as a direct result of the accident.

Lamontville Golden Arrows travelled from KwaZulu Natal to Limpopo, only to be greeted by a sight of a tragic road accident which claimed 28 lives.

According to the PSL, the team was stuck for hours on the N1 following the accident and only arrived at the hotel on Saturday morning.

While sending messages of condolences to the bereaved, the Limpopo Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Jacques Smalle also challenged the provincial government to prioritise road safety.

“The DA insists that the safety of every road user be ensured and prioritised and that there be ongoing and intensified road safety campaigns throughout the year,” he said.
