The Waterberg District Executive Mayor, Morris Mataboge, handed over learning materials to Pienaarsrivier’s Bathopele Secondary School on Friday 7 September as part of his drive to inculcate a culture of reading.

Present at the event were Waterberg mayoral committee member, Freddy Hlungwane, and Bela-Bela Mayor Jeremiah Ngobeni.

The Waterberg District Council adopted the school during the “Back to School Campaign” in January, after Grade 12 learners achieved a 100% pass rate during the 2017 matric examinations.

The event at Bathopele Secondary School was a sequel to a 2012 decision by the district council, in partnership with the regional educational authorities, and UNISA, to go on a programme
called “Adopt a School Library Campaign”.

Municipal spokesperson Pat Malete said more than 15 000 books had already been distributed to various schools across the Waterberg.

In his address, Mataboge said education was a societal issue, hence the contribution and care for the future of the learners, even though education was not the district municipalities’ core
function.

Meanwhile, on Friday 31 August, the Waterberg District Municipality rounded off its Women’s Month celebrations by hosting a Women in Sport event.

Participants took part in a 5-km fun walk and indigenous games.
