Crime crackdown bears fruit

The police in Limpopo have reason to believe recent anti-crime operations were bearing fruit.

Provincial SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, said in a statement on Monday 30 July that two suspects were arrested in Mookgophong in connection with “a spate of robberies”.

He said the suspects were linked to more than 30 cases including car hijack incident.

As a result of the broader crackdown, he explained, members of the Operation Fiela II initiative recovered, among others, five 9 mm pistols, a Guerrilla 9 mm air gun, rifle, 26 rounds of
ammunition, seven stolen vehicles, nine cellphones, and also airtime vouchers and cigarettes, to the value of R8 000.

The anti-drugs crusade netted 1 458 kg of dagga, 503 sachets of the weed, 1 288 grams of other drugs, 10 dagga plants and 224 sachets of nyaope.

Ngoepe said as a direct result of the operation, 1 238 suspects, aged between 19 and 68, were arrested for alleged crimes ranging from murder, attempted murder, rape, armed robbery,
residential and business burglary, business robbery, and escape from lawful custody.

A 68-year-old man was arrested after being found in possession of a firearm allegedly stolen from a truck accident.
