According to the local Ikageng Centre coordinator, Jonas Mngomezulu, the march did not take place as scheduled on Mandela Day, as the organisers were lobbying for healthy numbers.

He said the organisers were confident that the march on the weekend of the first Friday of August would be a success.

The protest march would start at 9:00 at Bela-Bela’s Sunfa Stadium, via the central business district, and end at Ikageng Centre.

The police and officials from the Bela-Bela-Local Municipality were expected to join the march.

He said self-confessed drug dealer, Thapelo Motaung, was billed as one of the main speakers.

Former Bela-Bela mayor Lucas Nhlapo is part of the co-ordinating committee.

He said communities would be nudged to confront the drug abuse challenge head-on, by urging addicts to find help and turn around their lives.
