Modimolle-Mookgophong Mayor Marlene van Staden had hopes that despite the challenges faced by the municipality, there was a glimmer of hope.

Van Staden said this following the approval of the 2018/19 budget by the local council.

She said the newly-approved budget was aimed at putting the municipality on the road to financial recovery.

“With the help of officials from the provincial and national treasury, the municipality presented a budget which will — given the fact that it still reflects a deficit — be coupled with the implementation of a detailed financial recovery plan across all departments,” she said.

According to the mayor, the budget is also aimed at financing and carrying out certain essential service delivery projects in the community.

She said that such crucial services included the establishment of a new Modimolle landfill site, the completion of the connection of toilets to the sewer system in Phomolong, and the
electrification of 500 houses in ward 6 (mainly in Mandela section).

“There is no doubt that the Modimolle-Mookgophong Local Municipality is in a very tough and challenging financial position, however, I believe that if all the role-players within the
municipality play their part — we can turn it around,” she said.
