Eskom prepaid meters will stop working soon

The power giant Eskom is in the process of starting a national initiative to recode prepaid meters.

This means that by a certain date, customers will not be able to load any more tokens onto their meters if the recoding was not done.

According to an Eskom statement the standard transfer specification meter (STS), which operates on the token identifier code (TID), will by 24 November 2024 stop accepting any credit tokens.

STS describes a secure message system for carrying information between a point-of-sale and a meter.

Luckily for customers, the recoding will be done at no charge, in conjunction with local municipalities. Customers will also be able to do it themselves, says Eskom.

The initiative will be done area by area throughout the country before the due date in 2024. Customers will be issued two key change tokens along with their normal credit tokens after purchase.

If the recode is successful and done correctly, the units will reflect on the meter.

Eskom warns in advance that fraudulent activity might take place during this phase and people must report it to police. Again, the recoding will be done at no charge.
