Sharp increase in cost of Modi-municipal services
Residents of the Modimolle-Mookgophong municipality will see stiff increases in their municipal accounts.
During a recent council meeting the integrated development plan (IDP), as well as the budget, was approved. Councilors of the Democratic Alliance (DA) were the only ones to vote against the approval of the budget, while the other parties voted for the adoption of higher rates.
The cost of water will increase by 45%. The basic charge for water for households will increase from the current R81,88 to R118,73.
The cost per kilolitre (1 000 liters, which is the equivalent to five drums of 200 liters each) is R23,01 (up from R15,87) for the first 10 kilolitres, R26,56 for 11 – 20 kilolitre (up from R18,31) and R35,46 for 21 – 30 kilolitres (up from R24,46). Residents who tamper with their water meters face a penalty of R20 000 plus the consumption calculated for three years. For business users, the penalty is R120 000 plus average consumption.
Regarding electricity, residents will pay 18,5% more with the basic charge for domestic conventional single-phase clients R219,47 (up from R185,22). Indigent consumers receive the first 50 kWh free. The unit charges per kWh consumed are R1,60 (up from R1,35) for the first 50kWh, R2,06 (up from R1,74) for 51 —- 350 kWh, and R2,90 (up from R2,45) for 351 – 600 kWh.
Those using more than 601 kWh will pay R3,40/kWh (up from R2,87).
Prepaid customers’ rates will be the same with a basic charge of R153,63.
The cost of sewerage services increases by 60%. The basic charge for households will be R86,52 for an erf up to 500 m², R115,36 for up to 1000 m², and R145,11 for up to 2 000 m². It will cost an additional R60,97 per 1 000 m² or part thereof.
Residents will pay 34,9% more for refuse removal. A flat fee of R191,89 is payable by all households connected to the sewer systems. This is up from R119,93. The cost for refuse removal at domestic dwellings will be R173,59 (up from R128,59). A newly implemented fee of R182,27 is payable for refuse removal where there is a second dwelling on a property.
