Students gain skills at municipality

Many youngsters will testify to the difficulty of being newly qualified, but with no work experience.

Employers often require previous employment before they will offer a job.

Thanks to a mutually beneficial agreement between the Lephalale TVET College and the Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipality, a group of students will gain that experience by working at the municipality for 18 months.

The youngsters will apply their newly acquired skills to aid the municipality in reducing the backlog on service delivery.

“This agreement is ideal for giving the students some work experience. Their qualifications range from N3 to N6 — the municipality prefers that they have an N6 qualification. Their skills range from programs in electrical work, plumbing, human resources, and management to public administration,” said the Mayor, Marlene van Staden.

The college, which resorts under the higher education and training department, will pay the students a monthly stipend.

According to Van Staden, the students work according to a structured program with a moderator on site to ensure they arrive on time and do what is required. The first group started at the beginning of January and a second group kicked off in March.

The Lephalale TVET College has a campus in Modimolle.
