Vigilantes kills alleged burglar in Mokopane

An alleged burglar was caught and brutally assaulted by residents in Extension 12 in Mokopane on Wednesday 14 February. The police are investigating a case of vigilantism and burglary following the incident.

According to police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba, the police found the severely injured suspect with some stolen property in his possession when they responded to a call. The man was transported to the hospital, but he succumbed due to his injuries.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect was linked with two cases of burglary committed in that area.

“We strongly condemn the actions of those who participated in this attack. Vigilantism undermines the rule of law and threatens public safety,” said Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Hadebe.

“It is imperative that justice is served through the appropriate legal channels. We urge anyone with information about this incident to come forward and contact the police to ensure that those responsible are held accountable according to the law.”

The police said that the identity of the man will be made known at a later stage.
