Escapee rearrested

A manhunt was launched by the SAPS Bela-Bela on Wednesday, 7 February for Jimmy Chauke, a 31-year-old male who was arrested in March and December 2023 for two cases of burglary in Bela-Bela.

According to Col Malesela Ledwaba, Chauke escaped from the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court in Bela-Bela.

“The circumstances surrounding his daring escape are the subject of investigation. The initial reports suggest that the suspect was brought to court from a holding cell to consult with his legal representative when he absconded,” said Ledwaba.

On Thursday, 8 February the police received information on the whereabouts of the alleged perpetrator and rearrested Chauke at Masakhane Village.

The suspect appeared in Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 12 February. Investigations are ongoing and the case is postponed to Friday, 23 February.
